BIOGRAPHY
Pablo Atchugarry was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on August 23rd, 1954. His father Pedro was a great art lover who grasped the aptitude and interests that Pablo already manifested in his childhood, stimulating him to take up the challenge of painting
He started showing his work at the age of eleven and, as an adolescent, soon started feeling the need to express himself in other forms and materials, such as sculpture in cement and compositions in metal and wood, although without neglecting his painting. His first personal exhibition was held in the Subte Municipal in Montevideo in 1972, followed two years later by his first exhibition abroad in Buenos Aires. At the end of the seventies, he made several trips to France, Spain and Italy, where in 1978 he held his first personal exhibition in Lecco.
In 1979, he discovered marble as a thoroughly fascinating material, sculpting his first piece in Carrara, “La Lumière”. Although he returned regularly to his native land, in 1982 he decided to settle in Lecco when he received the commission for his first large sculpture, a Pietà. Since 1989, Pablo has expressed himself through monumental works, which are now situated in various public and private spaces in Europe and America. In 1996, his Semilla de la Esperanza (Seed of Hope), was installed in the sculpture garden of the Uruguayan Government Building.
In the spring of 2001, the Province of Milan organized a retrospective of the last ten years of Atchugarry’s work in Palazzo Isimbardi, in the same year "The Obelisk of the Third Millennium" was inaugurated; a sculpture in white Carrara marble, it stands six metres high in the town of Manzano, Province of Udine. In early 2002, Atchugarry’s sculpture Ideali in Garfagnana marble, was given to Prince Rainier of Monaco as a tribute to the 50th anniversary reign. It won the national concourse “Monumento alla civiltá e cultura del lavoro Lecchese”, was inaugurated in Lecco in May 2002, and it was carved from a 33 ton Carrara block and stands 6.10 metres tall. In July 2002, Atchugarry received the Michelangelo Award in Carrara, in recognition of his artistic career, the same year he created the sculpture “ Ideali". He participated in the 50th International Exhibition of the Visual Arts -Venice Biennale in 2003 with an installation entitled "Dreaming of Peace". In 2005 he exhibited at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes of Buenos Aires. The renowned Groeninge Museum in Bruges, Belgium organized an exhibition in June of 2006 with works from private international collections.
During the year 2007 he realized the most great sculpture “On the way of light”, 8 metres high. The same year an important itinerant show “The plastic space of light” presented by Luca Massimo Barbero was organized in Brazil, it began in Brasilia at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, followed to Museu Brasileiro de escultura of São Paulo, and at the Museu Oscar Niemeyer of Curitiba, finished in March 2008 at the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales of Montevideo, where exhibited sculptures created during the last fifteen years in different kind of marbles and dimensions. One of most recent projects was open in 2006 a new atelier at El Chorro ( Maldonado),Uruguay, where he works during the European winter and where the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation was established in the year 2007 with the intention to disseminate fine arts and to create a place of meeting for artists of all kind of disciplines
Pablo now lives and works in Lecco, Lake Como, Italy.
